GROSSE POINTE FARMS (WWJ) -- There's good news in the case of a missing Grosse Pointe Farms woman with Alzheimer's: Officials say she was found safe after apparently walking all the way to Southwest Detroit.
Janet Michels, 65, was reported missing after leaving her home, near Mack Ave. and Moross, Tuesday morning, without her purse or cell phone.
Police said CCTV footage captured Michels walking westbound on Mack toward Moross, then south on Moross. She was then spotted later in the morning walking westbound on Lake Shore Road in front of St. Paul’s Church.
Throughout the day and night, public safety officers conducted an extensive search, investigating multiple possible sightings in Detroit, including Hart Plaza and the Detroit Riverwalk.
On Wednesday, police said Michels was finally located in Southwest Detroit — and she's OK.
WWJ has learned from a person involved in the search that she was found at Taqueria Mi Pueblo, a tax joint on Dix near State Street.
The Department of Public Safety said, in a statement: "We extend our sincere gratitude to the public, local businesses, community members, and partner law enforcement agencies for their assistance and vigilance during this search."
"Thank you to everyone who shared information, provided tips, and kept an eye out for Janet. Your support was critical in helping bring this situation to a safe resolution."
