ALGER COUNTY (WWJ) - Three boys were safely located by authorities thanks to text messaging after they went missing in the Upper Peninsula this week.

As reported by WLUC-TV, the Alger County Sheriff's Office was made aware of the missing boys around 6 p.m. Thursday when they reportedly got separated from their hiking group at the Hiawatha Boy Scout camp on Doe Lake Road in Au Train Township.

A search effort consisting of the Alger County Sheriff’s Deputies, Alger County K9 Unit, and the Alger County Rescue 21 team immediately responded to the area and began looking for the boys.

Authorities said within 30 minutes of searching, responders were able to find the three children uninjured.

The sheriff's office is crediting text messaging with the safe outcome.

According to authorities, the Alger County Dispatchers were able to contact the children through 911 texting and obtained their GPS coordinates for the search team.

The boys were told to stay put so rescuers could find them.

The Alger County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents and visiters to the area that 911 texting is available in the event of an emergency, even if there is no cell service.
