FRENCHTOWN TWP. (WWJ) - The pursuit through Frenchtown Township ended when the suspect was tasered and taken into custody.

The incident took place in Frenchtown Township around 11:15 p.m. Jan. 18. Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Brandon Larkins attempted to pull a blue Ford F-150 over for a traffic offense at N. Dixie Highway and Sandy Creek Road, a release from the Sheriff’s Office said.

A pursuit began when the driver reportedly fled from Larkin.

Authorities say the driver made a wide turn onto E. Elm Avenue and sideswiped a utility pole. He stopped at the railroad tracks near N. Dixie Highway, at which point he left the vehicle and began to approach the officers. The suspect was tasered for reportedly not following orders and was taken into custody.

During the pursuit, a Sheriff’s Office vehicle went off the road and into the River Raisin at E. Elm Avenue and Detroit Avenue. The deputy that was driving was briefly trapped, but was ultimately able to escape.

Both the suspect and deputy were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

The 66-year-old suspect, a man from Monroe, was taken to the Monroe County Jail on charges including fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing and operating while intoxicated.

His identity is being withheld pending his arraignment.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information should contact Larkins at 734-240-7764.
