MONROE (WWJ) — A Monroe County man has been arrested after leading police on a chase in a stolen car Saturday night.

It all started around 7:30 p.m. on June 8 when the Monroe Police Department responded to calls of a carjacking on Macomb Street.

The victim told police the suspect attacked them and stole their olive green Subaru Outback and fled the scene headed south on Macomb.

Monroe County Sheriff's deputies were called to assist in the search for the stolen car and less than 15 minutes later, a deputy found the Subaru heading north on Monroe Street in Frenchtown Township.

The suspect refused to pull over when the deputy initiated a traffic stop and a chase ensued. The sheriff's office says the stolen Subaru continued fleeing at "moderate speeds" onto northbound Telegraph.

Another deputy set up stop sticks on Telegraph as the suspect approached the Frenchtown Villa Mobile Home Park. After the stop sticks took out two of the Outback's tires, the suspect turned into the mobile home park and "led Deputies around the park" until stopping abruptly.

The suspect, identified as a 47-year-old man from Newport, got out of the car and tried to run, but he was quickly taken into custody.

He is expected to face charges of fleeing and eluding, assault and battery on police and resisting and obstructing in connection with the chase. Police in the city of Monroe are also pursuing charges tied to the carjacking.

The incident remains under investigation. Officials are asking anyone who knows something about the carjacking or chase to call 734-240-7534.
