WHITEFORD TWP., MICH. (WWJ) An hours-long standoff between Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, police and a man wanted for questioning in a criminal investigation came to a peaceful end.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office told WWJ they went to a home on Walnut Drive around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in Whiteford Township to interview the man, 62.

Before officers arrived, the man had reached out to his family via phone and said he was going to hurt himself if the police “confronted him,” the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies learned the man may have had a weapon. They also did not know where he was on his rural property. They set up “a wide perimeter” and called in Dundee Police to assist with their drone, according to the sheriff’s office.

“The man was located in a wooded area near his home but he refused to communicate or otherwise respond to police commands,” the sheriff’s statement reads. “Due to the dangerous circumstances, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team and Negotiation Team was activated and advanced negotiations began.”

The man “surrendered his weapon” and was arrested after “several hours,” the sheriff’s office said.

It’s not clear exactly what time the standoff came to an end.

The identity of the suspect has not been released at this time, nor have any details on the criminal investigation he’s being questioned for.
