MONROE TOWNSHIP (WWJ) A Monroe County school district employee was arrested after he allegedly broke into a home and held a woman hostage.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened Friday at the Monroe County Intermediate School District (ISD) on Rainsville near Custer in Monroe Township.

The sheriff’s office said staff of the Monroe County Intermediate School District alerted Sergeant Jason Miller (who was assigned to the ISD) to a man behind the ISD building “acting erratic”. Sergeant Miller found the man— started a conversation with him and learned he was an ISD employee. While they spoke, the suspect made gestures that led Miller to believe he was armed.

Sergeant Miller informed Monroe Central Dispatch. Several law enforcement agencies from across Monroe County converged on the area. The suspect ran away from the school and off-grounds.

He ran across the street and into an unlocked home with a man and two women inside, according to the sheriff’s office.

They said the suspect barricaded himself in a bedroom with one of the women. Deputies surrounded the home, then entered. After they began negotiations with the suspect, they went into the bedroom and rescued the woman. They arrested him "without incident" on Home Invasion charges.

She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.

Michigan State Police assisted the sheriff’s office at the scene, along with Ida Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.

The suspect’s name is being withheld pending formal arraignment. If anyone has information on the crime, they should call the Monroe County Detective Bureau at (734) 240-7530.
