DEARBORN (WWJ) – An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting inside Dearborn police headquarters left a 33-year-old suspect dead.

Michigan State Police officials say the MSP Special Investigation Section has been requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting that happened in the police station Sunday.

The incident happened in the front lobby of the headquarters on Michigan Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Officials say the suspect drove to the station, parked out front and walked into the building.

The suspect then took out a 9mm pistol and tried to fire at an officer behind the front desk, who then returned fire, according to a report from WDIV.

MSP officials say no officers or members of the public were injured. The dead suspect is from Dearborn, according to MSP.

While a motive in the case remains unclear, the suspect has a history of mental illness, according to MSP.

Police are continuing to investigate.
