EAST LANSING (WWJ) - New, heightened security measures will be in place as fans file their way into Spartan Stadium to see MSU take on Richmond on Saturday.
Michigan State University officials said walk-through metal detectors -- managed by MSU Police and Public Safety -- will be installed at the stadium, adding to the university's existing safety and security portfolio.
The metal detectors will be ready for fans by kickoff on Sept. 9.
"We are committed to continuing to enhance our safety and security portfolio at Michigan State University,” said Vice President and Chief Safety Officer Marlon Lynch. “This new addition to Spartan Stadium will continue to make sure the venue remains safe for all to enjoy.”
Guests are advised to come early to Spartan Stadium on game days to get through secuirty. When making their way in, fans will not need to take items out of their pockets unless the metal detector goes off.
If the alarm sounds, the guest will be individually checked by a security guard.
University officials added that metal detectors are already in use at the Breslin Center. MSU plans to also put them in use at the Wharton Center, Munn Ice Arena and the MSU Tennis Center.
"Fans can also receive game day updates from the department by texting SPARTANFB23 to 888777," the university said. "Updates include information about safety and security, potential game delays, parking and traffic suggestions, bag policies, and more."
