(WWJ) In a dramatic turnaround, Kevin Guskiewicz is staying on as president of Michigan State University.

Clemson University officials have confirmed that Guskiewicz’s previously announced transfer to their campus is officially off, with the decision attributed to personal reasons.

The change of heart comes after he announced his exit from MSU while publicly calling out internal infighting and a toxic environment involving certain members of the Board of Trustees.

In a message addressed to the Spartan community, Guskiewicz reflected on a period he said "created uncertainty and raised important questions."

Guskiewicz stated, in part: "After much thought, countless conversations and careful consideration, I have decided to remain at Michigan State University and continue serving as your president." He expressed that he and his wife, Amy, "love this university," describing MSU as a place that "has become home to our family."

Addressing the uncertainty his deliberation caused, Guskiewicz offered an apology to the community, writing, "Our university has experienced more than its share of change in recent years, and I regret that my decision-making over the past several weeks added to that uncertainty. For that, I am sincerely sorry." He acknowledged that restoring trust requires "consistency, transparency and action" rather than words alone, pledging to "continue showing up every day with energy, humility and purpose" to lead the university forward.

Looking ahead, Guskiewicz emphasized the importance of stable leadership and a robust governance structure. He noted that he has had "productive conversations about the governance challenges" with Board Chair Brianna Scott and Vice Chair Renee Knake Jefferson, praising the board's commitment to implementing improvements, such as updating the Code of Ethics and Conduct. Reaffirming his long-term dedication to MSU's academic, research, and land-grant missions, he concluded that "stability matters. Trust matters. Collaboration matters," and expressed confidence that "our best days are still ahead."

But while the university retains its president, a leadership shakeup is still hitting the athletic department. Following J Batt's recent decision to accept a matching position at the University of Kentucky, reports indicate that Michigan State has no plans to retain him during the transition.
