MT. PLEASANT (WWJ) — A Macomb County woman is recovering after Mt. Pleasant police officers pulled her from a burning car following a crash.
It all unfolded shortly before 10 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27 when a 22-year-old Sterling Heights woman was involved in a single-car rollover crash in a roundabout on North Mission Road, not far from the Central Michigan University campus.
Responding Mt. Pleasant police officers found the car on its side with flames coming out of the back.
Body-worn camera footage released Tuesday shows one officer breaking out the front windshield with an ax to rescue the woman, who was able to kick through the windshield, allowing the officer to drag her out.
The officer continued to smash the windshield with the ax as they searched for anyone else who may have been in the car. Seconds later the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames and officers and the woman had to get away.
Luckily, police said, no one else was in the car.
The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was treated for what police described as minor injuries.
Authorities have not said what caused the crash or if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
The Mt. Pleasant Police Department was assisted by the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, Isabella County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, MMR, and Isabella County Central Dispatch.
