NOVI (WWJ) - A multi-car crash Friday morning is causing big backups on both the expressway and surface streets.
Callers into WWJ said anywhere from five to nine cars are involved in the crash on eastbound I-96 near Novi Road.
Vehicles were scraping against the median on the left shoulder attempting to get around the crash due to all lanes being blocked by the crash, according to a tipster.
The Michigan State Police are allowing people to pass on the left shoulder, but traffic is backed up to Wixom Road. There is a delay of more than two hours.
WWJ's Charlie Langton said some surface streets in the area are also seeing backups from increased traffic.
Cleanup is underway. There are multiple tow trucks on the scene. Tipsters said there may be one car waiting to be picked up by one of the tow trucks.
Drivers should exit at Milford Road and take eastbound Grand River down to Novi Road to get back onto 96. People in Brighton can take 23 to M-14 to avoid the crash.
Westbound 96 is also backed up due to people slowing to see the crash.
There are no injuries reported at this time.
