ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- As the number of overdose deaths continues to climb around the country, a local organization is doing what it can to prevent them.

A free clinic in Royal Oak is taking place Wednesday to teach people how to identify an overdose, administer nasal Narcan and provide resources for help.

"People are encouraged to just walk up or drive up," said Tracy Chirikas with the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities.

Chirikas says people will get a brief Narcan training session to understand the signs and symptoms of what an overdose looks like.

She notes there is a misconception about overdoses and who they happen to, adding that anyone who takes opioid-based pain medication is at risk.

"We're human beings and we don't treat our pain very well -- and sometimes we wait until the last minute to treat that pain; therefore, we take too much."

You can walk or drive up today to the Skywood Recovery Center in Royal Oak and learn how to save a life from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. There are also free online classes available HERE.
