Royal Oak National Coney Island employee arrested for stealing $400 from manager

The employee admitted to stealing the money so he could pay off a debt.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WWJ) -- An employee at National Coney Island in Royal Oak has been arrested for stealing more than $400 from the manager’s office.

Royal Oak police say they were called to the coney restaurant at 1812 N. Main Street around 4 p.m. on July 25 after the manager noticed he was missing money.

The manager was counting the previous day’s deposit, according to police, when he noticed it was short by more than $400. He reviewed surveillance video and saw the employee taking the money.

The employee, a 26-year-old from Detroit whose name was not released, admitted to stealing the money because he had to pay off a debt.

The suspect had multiple warrants out for his arrest. He was arrested for embezzlement and the other misdemeanor warrants. Authorities did not disclose what those warrants were for.

Authorities have not released any word on arraignment.
