(WWJ) While prosecutors still have not yet filed charges in the shooting death of Oakland County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Reckling, we're learning more about the teenage suspects in custody.
The Detroit News says two of the three young men were arrested just three months ago following a traffic stop in Troy that led to a police chase through several jurisdictions. The 18-year-old alleged driver was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and fleeing from police.
The man's attorney told the News that he was also under investigation for a carjacking.
The second 18-year-old man is also accused in the March incident and charged with carrying a concealed weapon.
Both were out on bond at the time of Reckling's death.
WWJ Legal Analyst Charlie Langton says charges in Reckling's death may be coming soon, as — under Michigan law — suspects cannot be held more than 72 hours if they have not been charged with a crime.
Langton said at least two of the suspects will stay in jail because their bond was revoked in their other criminal cases. This, he said, will give prosecutors more time to develop a case for charges in Reckling's death; likely for murder.
"As of yesterday, I did call the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office and I was told that charging documents from the Detroit Police has had not yet arrived," Langton said. "That's not unusual because at least two of the three are being held on other charges; not sure yet of that third one."
Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said Reckling was in an unmarked patrol car searching for an SUV that had been reported stolen from the Red Oaks Water Park in Madison Heights earlier in the day.
Detroit police officials say as Reckling, 30, was behind the stolen Chevy Equinox, suspects jumped out and fired shots at him, striking him in the head, chest and torso.
Sheriff Mike Bouchard called it "an ambush."
Three people were taken into custody Detroit Police and Michigan State Police were able to set up a perimeter in the area.
