CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mich. (WWJ) – A man and woman in their 70s have died following a home explosion in Northern Michigan over the weekend.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office got a call shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday reporting a home in Lovells Township – just northeast of Grayling – had collapsed.

But when first responders showed up to the home on Fruit Farm Road they quickly realized that it had not collapsed, but had actually exploded, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a gas leak inside the home.

A 71-year-old man and 72-year-old woman were home at the time of the explosion, according to the sheriff’s office. First responders found their bodies on the property when they got to the scene.

Their names have not been released and officials did not say whether they were related.

While the explosion remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said Monday no foul play is suspected in the incident.

Multiple police agencies and fire departments assisted the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office at the scene, including Michigan State Police fire investigators and the Lovells Twp. and Frederic Township fire departments.
