NORTHVILLE (WWJ) — A family is safe, thanks to a fast-acting neighbor, after a suspected lightning strike caused a fire at a home in Northville early Monday morning.
Around 7 a.m. on June 17, a neighbor saw smoke pouring from the roof of a home near Six Mile and Napier. Northville Fire Chief Brent Siegel told WWJ the neighbor ran across the street and knocked on the door.
He was able to wake the family and get them out of the house.
“They had no idea their house was on fire,” Siegel said.
Fire crews responded to the home and were able to contain the fire to the attic, according to Siegel.
The fire chief said while officials are still investigating the fire, it appears that the fire started when lightning struck the home.
“All indications, certainly, suggest that it was due to a lightning strike with the storms in the area at the time.”
As powerful thunderstorms rolled across Michigan overnight, many areas of the state saw problems, including heavy flooding in the Lansing area.
Mostly scattered storms are possible later Monday evening, according to AccuWeather.
The big weather concern for Metro Detroiters this week, however, is the heat. An Excessive Heat Warning has been issued for all of Southeast Michigan through Friday.
