NOVI (WWJ) -- As high school football practice resumes once again this week, many student athletes around metro Detroit are rejoicing. But for one local school, there has only been shock and heartbreak.
Staff and students at Novi Detroit Catholic Central High School are mourning the loss of a football player, who died after collapsing during conditioning practice last week.
In a post online, officials with high school say sophomore Stephen Sylvester passed away on Saturday.
“We are incredibly saddened by the passing of Stephen," the statement read. "He was a bright young man, and a valued member of our school community. At this point we ask for some privacy for the family, our students, our faculty, and our staff while we work to support all of those so intimately impacted by this loss.”
The incident appeared to occur earlier in the week, as Sylvester was listed on the school’s website under their prayer request list on Thursday, with a note saying he was “experiencing a health challenge.”
