EATON TWP. (WWJ) -- A Genesee County man was relieved of his guns and ammunition over the weekend because police say he didn't have the proper paperwork.

According to officials with the Michigan State Police First District, it happened after the man ran out of gas on Cochran Rd. at Broadway Hwy., in Eaton Township on Sunday.

When troopers with the MSP Lansing Post stopped to help the driver, identified as 23-year-old Davison resident, they found that he had "numerous firearms and ammunition" in his car, but didn't possess a CPL (Concealed Pistol License).

The weapons were seized and the driver was booked in the Eaton County Jail on weapons charges, police said.

Under Michigan law, anyone without a CPL can travel in a vehicle with a licensed handgun only if the firearm is kept in unloaded in a closed case designed for firearm storage in the trunk of the vehicle. Or, if the vehicle does not have a trunk, the firearm must be stored in a location that is not readily accessible to the vehicle's occupants.

The man's name was not released as he awaits an arraignment.
