ROYAL OAK (WWJ) -- Michigan State Police are releasing more details about a fiery, wrong-way freeway crash that left four people dead in Royal Oak over the weekend.

According to officials with the MSP Second District, the driver responsible for the wreck was a 29-year-old Oak Park man behind the wheel of a black Volkswagen.

He was among those killed in the crash, police said.

The other four people who died were in the other vehicle, a Dodge Caravan. They have been identified by MSP as a 34-year-old Troy man, a 54-year-old man from Mexico, and a 71-year-old man from Mexico.

Also in the Caravan was a 31-year-old Troy woman, police said. She was in critical condition when she was rushed to a hospital after the crash, just before 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Police said the woman remained hospitalized on Monday, but she was expected to survive.

As for what happened, MSP said the at-fault driver was headed north in the southbound lanes of I-75 on Sunday, when he crashed into the Caravan near 11 Mile Rd.

While the medical examiner has completed the initial examination, police aid they were still waiting on toxicology and other reports to help determine further circumstances of the case.

"Troopers are continuing to investigate the crash including where the at fault driver may have entered the freeway," MSP added, in a Monday update.

The freeway was closed for six hours for cleanup, but all lanes have since reopened.

The names of the people who died are not being released at this time, although police said their families have been notified.
