SPRINGFIELD TWP. (WWJ) -- The Springfield Township Fire Department, in northern Oakland County. says Lt. Jonathan Miner’s legacy will never fade.

Miner died Sunday morning after an explosion at his home, leaving behind a wife, seven children, and a department that considered him family.

Colleagues say he led by example, steady in crisis, selfless in service, and the first to volunteer when others hesitated.

Miner was one of the first responders at last month's church shooting, and fire, in Grand Blanc.

"He's an on-call officer for the weekend, a real terrible thing happens up in Grand Blanc, and guess who's coming to save the day, right? It was Jon," said Springfield Fire Chief Matt Covey. "And he helped bring a team up there and helped lead the scene up there. And our firefighters were heavily involved with that scene up there, that tragic event, and John was right there helping everybody out."

Plans are in motion for a public memorial to celebrate his life and commitment to service.

Meanwhile, his family faces the unimaginable task of navigating a future without him, not only dealing with immense grief but also the unexpected financial burdens that come with such a sudden loss.

An online fundraising page reads:

"In the fire service, we have a sacred promise: we always have each other's back. When a brother falls, we lift up their family. Today, we ask you to join us in fulfilling that promise for Lt. Minor.

"Your donation will provide direct and immediate support to the Minor family. It will help cover funeral expenses, manage daily bills, and provide a measure of stability for his children as they face a future without their dad. It will give them the breathing room they need to grieve without the added weight of financial worry.

"Let's show this family they are not alone. Let's wrap them in the support of the community Jonathon loved and served so faithfully."
