Road Commission for Oakland County seeking to hire full-time road workers

BEVERLY HILLS (WWJ) -- Workers are wanted at the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC).

The commission is continuing their search for those interested in helping to maintain the county road system.

“We think of these people as ‘road warriors’,” RCOC Managing Director Dennis Kolar stated. “These are the front-line workers who handle the day-to-day maintenance necessary to keep our roads open and in good shape. The positions are laborers/drivers and require a Michigan Commercial Driver’s License with an air-brake endorsement (CDL-A). The starting wage for the position is $18.53 per hour, rising to $24 per hour after completion of a probationary period.

Workers will also receive a competitive benefit package with health and dental insurance, a tuition reimbursement program and a retirement package for vested employees.

The employees in this position perform a variety of tasks including traffic control, pothole patching, roadside cleanup, working with basin tree and pavement repair crews, winter operations (salting, plowing) and servicing and maintaining equipment.

Additionally, workers must be able to operate large vehicles (greater than 26,000 Ibs. and operate heavy-construction equipment such as an excavators, graders, vactors, and loaders.

Candidates must be willing to work in extreme weather conditions, and be physically able to perform repetitive motions, stand for long periods of time, and move objects up to 90 pounds.

RCOC notes that “all work is done collaboratively, safely and efficiently and must be performed in a citizen-oriented manner in accordance with all rules, regulations and policies.”

A high school diploma is required, and anyone accepting this position must be willing to accept placement at any one of the six RCOC garage locations across Oakland County -- Milford Township, Springfield Township, Orion Township, Waterford Township, Southfield and Troy.
