CLINTON TWP. (WWJ) — An internal investigation is underway after an off-duty Detroit police officer was arrested for drunk driving over the weekend in Macomb County.
The Clinton Township Police Department announced Wednesday that officers were called to a crash Sunday and investigators determined one of the drivers had been under the influence of alcohol.
The drunk driver told officers he worked as a Detroit police officer, according to Clinton Township police.
Detroit police officials on Wednesday evening confirmed to WWJ an officer was arrested following the off-duty incident, saying "these alleged actions are disappointing" in a statement.
"There is a high standard of conduct that all Detroit Police Officers have sworn to uphold. Under no circumstances will the DPD condone acts of drunk driving by any of its members," the statement said.
Under DPD policy, the matter has been turned over to Internal Affairs and the officer was placed on administrative duty status pending the outcome of the investigation, meaning the officer can not have a gun, officials said.
No further details regarding the crash or arrest have been released. It is not clear where the incident happened or what time on Sunday it occurred. Authorities have not said whether anyone was injured or how many cars were involved.
The officer's name has not been released.
