DETROIT (WWJ) -- An Ohio man with multiple warrants out for his arrest is behind bars and awaiting charges after what Michigan State Police say was a combative traffic stop in Detroit Tuesday afternoon.
It all unfolded around 2:15 p.m. when troopers conducted a traffic stop on a 2015 Dodge Charger for reckless driving on M-10, the John C. Lodge Freeway. The man was pulled over at a BP gas station parking lot near the Lodge and 8 Mile Road.
The 31-year-old driver immediately got out of his Dodge, using profanity, and started to walk away, disregarding the troopers' orders to stop, MSP said in a tweet.
The trooper continued to give loud verbal commands for the suspect to remain where he was, but the suspect replied with "vulgar and aggressive responses," according to police.
Authorities say the trooper tried to stop the driver from leaving, when he pulled away and continued to disregard his orders. That's when the driver "became more irate and combative," leading the trooper to deploy his taser, which did not work in controlling the suspect.
Eventually, the trooper was able to take the driver into custody without incident, but the suspect continued to be aggressive towards the trooper.
When the trooper was attempting to search the suspect for his wallet, he allegedly kneed the trooper.
Police took the man to a hospital in Detroit to be medically cleared and while in the patrol car and at the hospital, the suspect continued to verbally threaten troopers, saying he was going to show up to their house as soon as he is released, according to MSP.
A further investigation revealed the suspect, whose name is yet to be released, is also wanted out of Ohio for number of charges. Police say the man is wanted for felony assault, resisting and obstructing police and concealed carry charges.
He also has misdemeanor warrants out of multiple jurisdictions in Michigan.
No charges have been announced stemming from Wednesday's incident, pending prosecutor review.
