DETROIT (WWJ) - A couple of shootings occurred after holiday celebrations in downtown Detroit Friday evening sent two victims, including a 15-year-old boy, to the hospital with gunshot wounds, police said.
Detroit Police Chief James White said the pair of shootings occurred near Campus Martius where the 19th annual Tree Lighting was held earlier in the night, with the first shooting was reported around 10 p.m.
White said gunfire was reported near Michigan Avenue and Griswold and a 15-year-old boy was hit in the neck. The teen was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition as of Friday night.
Police are searching for a suspect in connection with the incident, which White described as a young African-American wearing all black.
The second shooting was reported in front of Buffalo Wild Wings at 1218 Randolph Street. In that incident, White said another person was shot in the leg.
White clarified that while the two shootings occurred separately, they are connected.
"A bunch of kids hanging out downtown, one group gets into it with another group," the chief said. "It's unfortunate they have to bring guns downtown when we should all be having a good time."
Detroit police had a curfew enacted for minors at the time of the shootings. From 8 p.m. Nov. 18 until 6 a.m. Nov. 19., police said those under the age of 21 must be accompanied by an adult.
"Minors are welcome to attend the Tree Lighting," police said. "However, for their safety, minors must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult (age 21 or over) if they choose to attend the Detroit Tree Lighting after curfew."
Those underage caught in violation of curfew were to be taken to the DPD Downtown services center until they were picked up by a parent or guardian.
DPD had warned any parent or guardian picking up minors could face a parental responsibility violation ticket.
