Pedestrian in critical condition after being struck by semi crossing I-94 in Detroit

DETROIT (WWJ) -- An investigation is underway after a pedestrian was hit by a semi-truck while trying to cross I-94 on Detroit’s west side early Sunday morning.

Michigan State Police say three people crossed I-94 near Martin Street -- just west of Livernois Avenue -- around 2:15 a.m. Sunday. After reaching the other side of the freeway, one of the pedestrians turned around and entered the westbound lanes of I-94.

A semi driver was traveling in the middle lane of the interstate when they struck the pedestrian, who suffered life-threatening injuries.

First responders took the pedestrian to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where they were listed in critical condition Sunday morning. Authorities did not release any information about the victim, including name, age or hometown.

State police say they believe the pedestrians may have been looking for something, perhaps an item they dropped.

The other two pedestrians fled the scene before troopers arrived.

It was not clear whether the driver of the semi stopped at the scene.

Authorities are still investigating the crash.
