PORT HURON (WWJ) — A driver has been cited for causing an early morning crash with a Port Huron police officer over the weekend.

The crash happened around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at the intersection of 24th and Dove Streets in Port Huron.

The officer was headed south on 24th approaching a flashing yellow light, while a 52-year-old St. Clair resident was going east on Dove in a Dodge Ram pickup, according to the Port Huron Police Department.

The pickup truck driver disregarded the flashing red light and slammed into the police car in the middle of the intersection.

The crash, which was caught on security camera from a nearby gas station, sent both drivers to the hospital. They were both released with minor injuries, officials said.

The driver of the truck, whose name was not released, was cited for disregarding a flashing red light, causing an accident.

Officials did not say whether drugs, alcohol or distracted driving may have played a role in the crash.

“Every year, preventable accidents occur when drivers fail to observe traffic signals, ignore road signs, or get distracted,” the police department said in a press release Monday.

To help ensure the safety of all road users, the department released these important safety tips:

1. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions, including using your phone, adjusting the radio, or any other activities that may take your focus off the road.
2. Observe Traffic Signals and Signs: They are there for your safety. Follow all traffic lights and be cautious at intersections, especially when approaching flashing lights.
3. Drive Defensively: Always be aware of other drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. Anticipate the actions of others, and be ready to respond.
4. Use Caution in All Situations: Whether it’s day or night, clear or rainy, take your time and stay cautious, especially in busy or unfamiliar areas.

“Your focus on the road can prevent accidents and help keep our community safe. Let’s work together to make our roads safer for everyone—drive responsibly and always remain alert,” officials said.
