MUNISING, Mich. (WWJ) – Part of a popular hiking trail at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will be closed to start the summer season.
A roughly one-mile stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail at Miners Beach closed at the beginning of last week to replace the star structure and repair part of the trail that sustained severe storm damage last fall, lakeshore officials announced earlier this month.
Construction is expected to continue until at least early July, impacting the popular destination for hikers and sightseers.
The beach itself will remain open, with beachgoers, hikers and vehicles still having access to the beach. Signs will be placed to mark the reroute and temporary closures.
To access the beach, a smaller stair structure will be available near Miners River, a little further west, officials said.
While the eastern parking area of Miners Beach will be closed to non-commercial vehicles, officials said on Facebook it will often be used for permitted guided kayak tours. The west parking area will remain open to hikers and beachgoers.
About one mile of the North Country Trail from Miners Beach west to the eastern portion of the beach will be rerouted to prevent hikers and beachgoers from traveling through the construction zone.
Updates on construction and reopening will be available on the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore website. More information on the park can be found here.
