GREEN OAK TWP. (WWJ) — The FAA is investigating after a small plane crashed into the trees on a small, private airfield in Livingston County Monday afternoon.

Police officers rushed to the area of Rushton and 8 Mile Roads in Green Oak Township — between Brighton and South Lyon — around 1 p.m. after getting reports of the crash.

When officers showed up they found a single-engine Piper Cub plane "suspended in the trees with significant damage." Nothing was leaking from the plane, police officials said.

The lone occupant of the plane, a 72-year-old Canton man, was uninjured in the crash, according to police.

The man, whose name was not released, was able to climb out of the plane and get to the ground on his own, officials said.

The pilot told police he was coming in for a landing and a gust of wind "caused him to tip a little to the left and his wing caught a tree limb, forcing him to cartwheel into the trees, according to Green Oak Twp. police.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted and the incident is still under investigation.

Green Oak Township Police Department was assisted by Green Oak Township Fire Department and Livingston County Central Dispatch.
