PLYMOUTH (WWJ) — Two people are recovering after Plymouth police officers rescued them from a fire in their condo.
The fire broke out around 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at a condo complex where senior citizens live. Plymouth Fire Chief Pat Conely told WWJ Newsradio 950’s Jeremy Jenkins there was a “substantial hoarder situation” inside the condo.
The residents, whose ages were not released, called 911 from inside and police officers were the first to arrive at the scene.
When they arrived they discovered the front door was blocked by a grandfather clock. The officers struggled to get the residents out of the condo due to the clock and other things blocking the doorway.
Conely said the hoarding situation made it “really difficult to work through.”
Body camera footage shows the officers breaking a window to get inside, but ultimately the residents were pulled through the front door.
The victims were taken to the hospital with what Conely said were non-life-threatening injuries. Their conditions were not known late Wednesday afternoon.
Conely said the fire started in the basement near the furnace. A cause has yet to be determined, though he said it was not started in the furnace.
Conely said he was not sure how the residents got in and out of the condo, as it was largely blocked by the clock and other items, but a slider door in the kitchen was less obstructed.
