Police arrest suspect for breaking windows, throwing garbage at church in Royal Oak

OAKLAND COUNTY (WWJ) - Police took one man into custody after arriving at a church in Royal Oak on Tuesday and interrupted the suspect leaving a trail of destruction.

Authorities said 30-year-old Sung Lee, a resident of South Korea, was arrested for Breaking and Entering and Malicious Destruction of Property after he was found damaging the church.

Cops were first dispatched to St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 730 S. Lafayette Ave after receiving reports of a suspicious man inside the property around 9 p.m.

When police arrived, they witnessed Lee throwing things around inside the church; Lee was stopped and arrested as he was dragging a damaged statue of the Virgin Mary outside, authorities said.

Police allege Lee also broke an outdoor flood light, multiple windows in the front doors to the building and had thrown potted plants and garbage around outside; damages were estimated to be around $5,000.

Lee was arraigned on Thursday, March 8 and faces up to 10 years in prison; he due back in court on March 18 at 3 p.m. in the 44th District Court.
