Police arrest man accused of pointing 'AK-47 style rifle' at clerk in Troy gas station robbery

TROY (WWJ) -- Troy Police have arrested a man accused in a gunpoint gas station robbery caught on video.

Joseph Louis Carter, 38, is charged with Armed Robbery, Felon in Possession of Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm - Second Offense, in connection with an incident at the Shell station on Rochester Road at South Boulevard.

At around 2:30 a.m. on Oct. 20, police said the suspect walked in carrying "what appeared to be an AK-47 style rifle," approached the cash register, and demanded money.

Heard in security video released by police, the suspect tells the clerk, "Give me everything."

With one hand full of cash, the robber points the rifle at the clerk while ordering him to put his hands on his head and turn around.

"Count to a hundred; I'm not gonna kill you," the suspect says.

When the clerk starts counting, the gunman turns to leave as he threatens: "If you move, you die."

The suspect then fled on foot with the money. No shots were fired, and no injuries were reported.

Announcing Carter's arrested on Monday, police thanked the public and assisting law enforcement agencies for the "valuable information and assistance that helped move this case forward."

Police said the arrest was also was made possible through the exceptional teamwork and dedication of the Troy PD's patrol officers, evidence technicians, detectives, Tactical Support Team, Directed Patrol Unit (DPU), and Special Investigations Unit (SIU), adding: "We are proud of the cohesive effort by our department members to identify, locate, and ultimately arrest Carter without incident. We are also grateful to our community for their continued support, which ensures that we have the tools and resources necessary to do our jobs effectively."

Carter was arraigned in 52-4 District Court on Monday. Bond was denied, and he was remanded to the Oakland County Jail to await his next court date.
