ROSEVILLE (WWJ) -- A 53-year-old Roseville man is dead after a crash and an officer-involved shooting in Macomb County.

Authorities responded around 6:20 a.m. Tuesday to a crash involving a semi and pickup truck on Groesbeck Highway, between 12 Mile and Martin Roads.

Surveillance video footage shows a man in a silver Chevy Silverado crossing the center line and colliding head-on with the semi, according to police.

After the crash, witnesses approached the pickup to see if the man was ok. That's when he pulled out a knife and witnesses could see his wrists were cut, so they backed away and called police.

When officers arrived on-scene, they found the driver of the pickup, identified as Frank Robles of Roseville, holding a knife in the middle of the road. Officers asked him if he was ok, and he told them no.

Police officers gave repeated commands for Robles to drop the knife and he did not comply. One of the officers was retreating from the knife-wielding man as the he advanced towards him. The officer the fired his weapon at Robles, knocking him to the ground.

Robles attempted to get up from the ground, still in possession of the knife, according to police, and the officer fired several more shots, which prevented him from advancing any further.

Robles was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Authorities said Robles was a Roseville school custodian. The district superintendent described Robles as a hard worker and a good employee.

The superintendent added that when Robles didn't show up for work, he knew something must have been wrong.

The driver of the semi, a 65-year-old Ohio man, was uninjured in the crash.

Police officials say it's believed the responding officers fired a total of nine shots.

Authorities do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident.

Roseville's Police Chief told WWJ Newsradio 950's Charlie Langton that the Macomb County Sheriff's Department has been called in to investigate.

Fraser and Warren police were also assisting on the scene.

Groesbeck Highway was closed for more than seven hours, but reopened shortly before 2 p.m.
