DETROIT (WWJ) – Detroit Police say a man died Friday after being shot at an unauthorized barbershop in the back of a school.

Around 6:45 p.m., a victim suffering from a gunshot wound arrived at a local hospital.

According to police, someone drove the victim to the hospital and told them the shooting happened at Charles H. Wright Academy along Berg Road, north of 7 Mile, on the city’s west side.

Officers from the 8th precinct responded to school in an attempt to locate a scene or any additional victims.

“Based on that initial investigation, it has been determined that a staff member of the janitorial service of this school was running a haircutting operation out of the back of the school,” said 8th Precinct Captain Matthew Bray. “After hours, not sanctioned, obviously, by DPS.”

Investigators are not calling this a school shooting, as there were no DPS staff members or students at the school at the time of the shooting.

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting, but believe the suspect and the victim knew each other.

Captain Bray did not say if a suspect was taken into custody, but doesn’t believe there’s any threat to the community at this time.
