GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ) -- Following an overnight barricade situation that lasted more than six hours, a 24-year-old Grand Rapids man was arrested early Monday morning with the assistance of a police K9.

Sunday night, just before 8 p.m., Grand Rapids Police were on the city's northwest side, searching for a young man suspected in an earlier assault.

They located the alleged perpetrator, who ran into a home on the 1300 block of Leonard Street Northwest, near Walker Ave.

Attempting to escape, the suspect exited the residence, fired multiple shots, then retreated. Officers heard additional gun shots from inside.

After setting up a perimeter, law enforcement spent several hours trying to make contact with the barricaded man. The GRPD Major Case Team, Special Response Team, Crisis Negotiators were called in to provide backup.

At 3 a.m., a police K9 was deployed.

According to FOX 17's Lauren Edwards, the K9 bit the suspect, and was subsequently stabbed. The dog was transported to an animal hospital with serious injures, but is expected to recover.

After the scuffle with the police K9, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

In a press release, GRPD also thanked the Kent County Sheriff's Department, Wyoming and Walker police, and Michigan State Police for their help resolving the situation.
