MONROE (WWJ) – Police are asking for help identifying a man who was caught on camera abandoning a dog who is believed to have just given birth.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday released surveillance video from the parking lot of the Humane Society of Monroe County on Telegraph Road captured around 1 a.m. on June 28.

Video shows the man walking a spotted female pit bull mix with a leash in the parking lot. He then tied her to a sign post and casually walked away, leaving her behind.

Staff discovered the dog around 7 a.m. that morning. She has since been treated by a veterinarian who estimated her to be about 2 years old.

Vets said the dog – who they named Mandy – was still lactating and also had scratches along her mammary chain, which is an indication that puppies may have been recently nursing from her.

The staff described Mandy as “anxious and exhibiting symptoms of separation anxiety.” She has since been moved to a temporary foster home.
