(WWJ) -- Police in Oakland County are asking for the public’s help in identifying a woman who was caught on camera stealing an 80-year-old woman’s purse inside a Kroger store over the weekend.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office says the woman, who is from Chicago but is staying with her daughter in Independence Township, went shopping at the store at 5990 Sashabaw Road in Independence on Sunday.

After the woman had finished shopping, she called her daughter to meet her at the front of the store and she waited in the entrance vestibule with her groceries and placed her purse on a window ledge.

When the woman’s daughter pulled up in front of the store, she took her groceries out to the car. She realized only a few minutes later she had left her purse sitting on the ledge, but when her daughter went in to retrieve the purse, someone had already swiped it.

Surveillance video inside the store shows a woman who was wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray pants carrying a reusable shopping bag walk into the vestibule. When she sees the purse, she briefly pauses and checks for anyone watching her, before turning back and grabbing the purse.

Another video shows the woman a short time later walking into the women’s bathroom with both the purse and the shopping bag slung over her shoulder.

A few minutes later, the woman emerges with just the shopping bag.

The sheriff’s office says the purse was found in the corner of the bathroom. The only thing missing was $100.

Police are asking anyone who recognizes the woman in the videos to contact the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office at 248-858-4911.
