LAPEER (WWJ) — An investigation is underway after a gun belonging to a law enforcement agent was found in the Lapeer High School parking lot early Tuesday morning.
School district staff made the discovery on Feb. 11 at the school in the area of Saginaw Street and I-69, according to a statement from Superintendent Matthew Wandrie.
Wandrie said administrators and Lapeer Police Department officials “quickly determined prior to the start of the school day the weapon was the property of a law enforcement agent outside of Lapeer County.”
Police officials have “been in contact with that outside agency” and the Lapeer Police Department has assumed control of the investigation.
Officials did not immediately identify the outside agency and it was unclear how or when the weapon ended up in the parking lot.
Authorities searched the inside and outside of Lapeer High School and no other evidence was found. Administrators and police officials determined students and staff at the school “were never in any danger,” according to Wandrie.
“Please know that throughout Lapeer Community Schools, student and staff safety is always our utmost priority,” his statement said.
