DETROIT (WWJ) -- A police officer is injured, and teenager in critical condition after an altercation and shooting in Detroit overnight.
According to Detroit Police, two officers were on patrol on St. Marys St. near 7 Mile Rd. and Greenfield Tuesday night when they saw an car idling in a driveway, blocking the sidewalk.
Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald said two people inside the car were asked to get out, and they refused to comply.
When one officer tried to open the car door, Fitzgerald said the driver backed up into the car behind it in the driveway, then pulled forward and hit the scout car.
Fitzgerald said the driver then pulled forward and hit the scout car again before speeding off, dragging the officer.
That's when Fitzgerald said the cops opened fire.
"Fearing for their own safety, two officers did fire numerous rounds at the car. The car did flee. We found the car a couple of blocks over on Prevost," Fitzgerald said.
Fitzgerald said policed then learned the passenger in the car, believed to be 18 years old, had been shot four times: Three times in the arm, and once in the chest. He was taken to a hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
The officer who was dragged also went to the hospital for treatment of some injuries, but he is expected to be OK, Fitzgerald said.
Later in the morning, police said they were searching with a K9 team for the driver involved, believed to be a 17-year-old boy.
Wednesday evening police sent an update stating that the suspect turned himself in.
He was question by investigators and released pending further investigation.
