BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - A suspect is injured after he jumped off the Rouge River bridge to escape police during a pursuit, police say.
According to Brownstown Township police, the man was part of a group of suspects who allegedly stole three Ford Mustangs from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant on Wednesday evening.
The Woodhaven Police Department originally put out a broadcast about the thefts just after 7 p.m., officials said. Not seconds later, Brownstown police officers spotted the three Mustang Shelby GT500s heading northbound on I-75 nearly Sibley.
Police said officers attempted to pull over the stolen vehicles, but the drivers did not comply.
"Officers were able to stay with one vehicle which ultimately ran out of fuel on an overpass on I-75 near Pleasant Street in the City of Detroit," officials said in a statement.
The suspect abandoned the Mustang on I-75 overpass as officers approached the vehicle, getting out through the passenger side and jumping off the bridge in an attempt to get away.
Police said the suspect sustained injuries from the fall, which was estimated between 25 to 30 feet high.
The suspect was found in a vacant yard below the bridge and was immediately rendered aid by police and first responders.
He was taken to a local hospital via ambulance for treatment. His injuries were said to be non-life threatening, police said.
"He was identified as a juvenile male whose mother was notified and was turned over to her care and the care of the hospital," officials added.
There is currently no information on if the other suspects are in custody. The investigation remains ongoing.
