SALINE, Mich. (WWJ) -- Two victims are in critical condition, and a suspect is in custody, after police responded to an "active shooter situation" on Thursday in Washtenaw County's Saline.

Authorities say a 58-year-old man was arrested after he shot two people outside the former UAW Local 892 building, on the corner of N. Maple Road and E. Woodawn Drive, just before 11:30 a.m.

While Saline Police initially reported the shooting took place at the Linden Square Assisted Living Center on Woodland Drive, officials now say the shots were actually fired in a parking lot of a vacant UAW facility, which is across from the nursing home.

City and school facilities, including a middle school close by, went on a temporary lockdown in response.

According to Saline Police Chief Marlene Radzik, the gunman approached his ex-girlfriend as she was leaving the assisted living center, and walking to her car in the adjacent parking lot. That's when the chief said the suspect opened fire, shooting both his ex and a man who was walking with her.

Officials said both people who were shot were taken by EMS to University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition. The man has since been upgraded to stable condition, police said.

Police said a suspect — described as a "single shooter" — fled the scene in a vehicle.

A description was put out, Radzik said, and Washtenaw County deputies who were in the area responded just as the suspect vehicle was involved in head-on crash at Willis and Ann Arbor Street.

"A deputy caught up to him (the suspect) as did an MSP trooper," Radzik told Marshall. "The deputy ordered him out of the car. He was not complying with the commands, so the Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputy tased him. He is currently in custody."

The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash with the suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The alleged shooter was not injured.

Police did not immediately release the suspect's name, with expected charges pending.

Multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene, including the Michigan State Police, ATF and FBI. It remained an active scene, well into the afternoon.

Chief Radzik said she's not yet sure whether the suspect and the female victim had previous domestic violence issues, or what the motive was for the shooting. The investigation is ongoing.

Saline is located south of Ann Arbor.
