DEARBORN (WWJ) — Students at a Dearborn elementary school have been dismissed as normal after the was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon during an ongoing "police situation."

Whitmore-Bolles Elementary entered a soft lockdown "out of an abundance of caution" while police responded to reports of a man armed with a knife experiencing a mental health crisis at a home on the corner of Whitmore and Williams.

Under the soft lockdown, students were allowed to move around the school, but they weren't allowed out at recess.

Officials said there was never a threat to the school or neighbors.

WWJ's Jon Hewett reported from the scene police were first called to the scene around 9 a.m. and remained there after 5 p.m.

While no one else was inside the home, police officers and crisis negotiators were at the scene in large numbers, speaking with the man and trying to bring the situation to a peaceful end.
