PORT HURON (WWJ) -- A 44-year-old man has been arrested for the shooting of his three children, all of them under age 18, in their Port Huron home.
Police Huron Police responded at 6:10 a.m. on Thursday to the Glenview Garden Apartments, on at Krafft Rd. and 24th Ave., after multiple 911 calls came in reporting people had been shot.
Police said officers arrived to find all three young victims suffering from gunshot wounds. They were treated at the scene before being rushed to local hospitals.
Tragically, one of the victims — a 17-year-old boy — was later pronounced dead.
The other two victims were identified as a 13-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl. Police said they are both being treated in the hospital, and were last listed in critical but stable condition.
Police said the suspected shooter, who is the three victims' father, was taken into custody, and is expected to face criminal charges.
"Preliminary investigation indicates this was a domestic-related incident. The suspect has since provided investigators with details of the incident and remains in police custody," the Port Huron PD said, in a news release.
At a press briefing, Port Huron Police Chief Brian Kerrigan was asked — in light of this and other recent shootings — if he had any message to gun owners.
"If you're having mental health issues, if you're having problems, you know, seek the help before you let it rise to this level," Kerrigan said. "It's just a tragic incident that doesn't have to happen."
As for what led to this tragedy, and why, the chief said: "Investigators are working through that right now, and talking with everybody and trying to put it together...But I don't have an exact answer to that. I don't know that we'll ever have a sensible answer to it at all, anyway."
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office and Michigan State Police are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
No names have been released.
