DETROIT (WWJ) — It may still be winter, but some summer-like storms are in the forecast for Metro Detroit over the next couple days.

The National Weather Service says there will be several rounds of strong to severe storms beginning Monday night through Wednesday morning.

While most of Southeast Michigan is at a "marginal risk" for severe weather Monday night into Tuesday morning, that risk is upgraded to "slight" until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The NWS expects elevated showers and thunderstorms to develop overhead early Tuesday morning, with isolated large hail up to an inch possible.

Another round of thunderstorms capable of producing "damaging winds" will develop along a warm front Tuesday evening, with "all modes of severe weather possible," according to the NWS.

The possibility of a tornado "cannot be ruled out" for most of lower Michigan Tuesday night, with the risk lasting through roughly 11 p.m. Storms will transition to linear mode with isolated damaging wind threat possible until the front passes.

AccuWeather meteorologist Kerry Schwindenhammer tells WWJ the area with the best chance of seeing a possible tornado is south of Metro Detroit.

Schwindenhammer says there's also a possibility for flash flooding across the area.

The NWS says you should "always have a severe weather safety plan in place" and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
