PLYMOUTH TWP. (WWJ) -- Pothole repairs will close down a major Metro Detroit freeway over the weekend.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will close northbound I-275 starting Friday evening, April 22, until 5 a.m. Monday, April 25.

According to MDOT, the freeway will be closed so crews can fix the "numerous potholes and pavement failures."

“The pavement on northbound I-275 is deteriorating quicker than anticipated and repairs must be done,” Plymouth Township officials wrote. “MDOT plans to have several crews go “all in” and repair potholes over the weekend. Due to limited width (because of the temporary concrete barrier wall and narrow shoulder), there’s simply not enough room to maintain traffic and safely maintain traffic.”

The freeway will be closed from I-94 to approximately Five Mile Road.

All entrance ramps to northbound I-275 from I-94 including, Ecorse Road, US-12, M-153, Ann Arbor Road and eastbound M-14 will be closed.

Detours will take motorists from northbound I-275 to eastbound I-94 to northbound M-39 to westbound I-96.

Southbound I-275 -- and associated ramps -- will remain open throughout the road work.
