DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Protestors against COVID-19 pandemic measures for international truckers are causing major backups at the Ambassador Bridge for those crossing the border into Canada Friday evening.

WWJ's Claire Beverly said there is a currently a 45 minute wait for commercial vehicles to get across the bridge to Windsor, with potential impacts on I-75 and I-95 in southwest Detroit.
The protests stem from COVID rules enacted by the Canadian government for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated truck drivers crossing in and out of the U.S., the Associated Press reported.
Under the new mandate, unvaccinated truckers coming from the US will be subjected to a COVID test and a 14 day quarantine -- the new rule started Jan. 15.
The U.S. adopted a similar rule that went into effect Jan. 22.
According to the Associated Press, the protests dubbed "Freedom Convoys" have swept across major cities in the northern country, causing major traffic disruptions and disturbing local residences. The protests have now spread to neighboring Windsor, whose effects are now being felt across the river in Detroit.
WWJ's Claire Beverly said border officials have no timeframe for how long the delay will last, but did confirm the current wait time for commercial crossing is apporximently 45 minutes.
