(WWJ) - Dana Nessel will serve another four years as Michigan's Attorney General after beating out her Republican challenger, Matthew DePerno, Wednesday morning.
DePerno conceded the race shortly after 9 a.m. in a statement posted to Twitter.
"Thank you to all of the Patriots and supporters across Michigan!" he wrote. "Although I may be conceding to Dana Nessel today, I refuse to concede that Michigan is a blue state. I will continue to fight like hell to restore Michigan to all it can be. Thank you to each and every one of you!"
As of mid-morning, 91% of all ballots had been counted with Dana Nessel racking up 2,201,962 votes and leading 52% over DePerno's 1,903,048 votes and 45%, NBC reported.
The news outlet projected Nessel as the winner.
While votes from several conservative counties have yet to be tallied, most of the votes waiting to be counted come from traditionally Democratic areas such as Detroit, Lansing and more, contributing to Nessel's growing number.
In a speech to Democrats shortly after midnight at Motor City Casino in Detroit, Nessel said, "things are looking pretty good right now," and expressed her hopefulness to serve the state yet again.
"Serving as the People's Lawyer in Michigan for the last four years has been an honor," she sent out on social media. "I'm grateful for all of the support you've shown me and am hopeful that after today, I'll have earned your support for the next four."
Meanwhile, DePerno reached out to supporters of Twitter about the close race and thanked them during the wait overnight.
"I know we're all eagerly waiting to know who will be Michigan's next attorney general. We must respect the election process and ensure that every *legal* ballot is counted," DePerno said. "I ask that my supporters remain patient as hardworking election workers complete the count."
DePerno was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and is a lawyer with his own law firm in Southwest Michigan before taking to the campaign trail.
Nessel was elected attorney general in 2018, assuming the office in January of 2019.
She has previous experience as an assistnat proscutor in the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office before opening her own law firm
