(WWJ) State agriculture officials are warning consumers to immediately stop using various dairy products from an Ionia County creamery due to potential allergen contamination and unsanitary production conditions.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) issued the advisory after a recent inspection of the Dancing Goat Creamery processing plant.
Inspectors identified the potential for undeclared allergens — including peanut butter, eggs, and soy —a s well as conditions that failed to meet state and federal food safety requirements.
According to MDARD, any products sold under the “Dancing Goat” or “Goats Best” brand names produced prior to May 4, 2026, are considered unsafe.
The warning covers a wide range of items, including:
- Packaged goat’s milk cheeses
- Gelato
- Fluid goat’s milk
Officials noted that retail invoices for these products may list the seller as “Brookwood Farm” or “Brookwood Farm Creamery.”
Health Risks and Unsanitary Conditions
The department warned that individuals with allergies or severe sensitivities to peanuts, eggs, or soy face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume the affected products.
Beyond allergen concerns, inspectors reported that the facility’s processing and storage practices could lead to broader contamination. MDARD stated that the creamery utilized dirty equipment and potentially contaminated raw ingredients, which increases the risk of pathogens such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria.
Guidance for Consumers
While no illnesses have been reported to date, retailers have been instructed to remove the products from shelves, and consumers are urged to discard any items matching the description in their refrigerators or freezers.
Health officials advise anyone experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, or fever after consuming these products to contact a healthcare provider immediately.
