(WWJ) A Redford Thurston student is hospitalized in stable condition after they were shot on a school bus Wednesday afternoon.
Redford Police were called to the school around 2:45 p.m. The student was wounded while inside the bus that was parked in front of the school on Schoolcraft Road, east of Inkster Road.
Police say the gun was recovered and there is no ongoing threat to the community, but there was no information released on who fired the shot and how the gun got onto the bus.
More information is expected to be released Thursday.
The South Redford School District issued a statement Wednesday evening that said: We want to reassure our community that there is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the campus. At this time, we want to allow our school community time to process and heal and therefore our High School will be closed on Thursday, May 8, 2025. Additional support services will be made available for students and staff in the days ahead, as the safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.
The police department said all gun owners should make sure their weapons are securely locked up and inaccessible to those that should not handle them.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Ryan Eddings at 313-387-2575.
