DETROIT (WWJ) - A quick-thinking resident who alerted neighbors to a fire at an apartment building on Detroit's west side Tuesday morning is being credited with saving multiple lives.

WWJ's Mike Campbell said the fire started early Tuesday morning at the Greenfield Square Apartments on Greenfield between Eton and Fenkell, north of Grand River. The fire started at one of multiple buildings which holds apporximently 16 units to each building.

"It was just one unit that caught fire, but it was enough to cause a lot of panic," Campbell said.

Resident Taylor T. told Campbell that she and a friend realized the danger and began waking neighbors up.

"Started knocking on everybody's door trying to get everybody out of here because there are so many seniors in this building," Taylor said. "The smoke, the visibility was fading very quickly, it was just so much, I just had to think quick... I just had to think about everybody else."

Taylor said she was able to get to her mother first, who lives next door, and then she and a friend went around the building to alert others.

Neighbors told Campbell that her quick actions and going door-to-door saved many lives.

Fire Chief James Harris said the fire was quickly put out by fire crews and no injuries were reported. Harris told Campbell that most residents will have access to their apartments,

Campbell reported that a couple of tenants will be relocated as the fire damaged one apartment and at least two others sustained smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this hour
