DETROIT (WWJ) -- More than a dozen residents got a startling wake-up call Tuesday morning when flames and smoke erupted throughout their apartment building in Detroit.
According to Detroit Fire Department's Chief Darrell Freeman, the fire started at around 5 a.m. on the first floor, inside a single unit, at Central Apartments on Central Avenue, between Pitt and Dix streets, in the southwest area of the city.
The fire went to two alarms, with EMS called, before the flames were brought under control.
People who lived inside the building told WWJ's Charlie Langton that smoke filled the hallways.
All 20 residents were able to make it out safely, according to officials; however, one woman who required oxygen was taken to the hospital as a precaution, and is expected to be okay.
One resident, Dallas Keith, said that when he was forced out of his home he was thinking, "Oh my god, what am I gonna lose?"
"But, I gotta make sure I'm good first," Keith added.
Another resident said she was awoken from a sleep to someone in the building screaming, "Fire!" She said she was so panicked that she ended up running out of her apartment practically naked.
"It's terrible -- something you don't wanna see," said Linda. "You're supposed to trust your neighborhood, your neighbors and everyone in between. God bless them, but this is very sad."
No injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is currently on scene helping residents who need it.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
